Declassified the name of the next version of macOS

The publication of Pike’s Universum published details about the future models of the iMac, which is expected later this year and the new generation Mac Pro workstations. Among the insiders mentioned that the next version of macOS (10.13) will not be named after mountains or the Park, as the previous releases of Apple.

Citing a source familiar with the situation, the publication reports that there are two version of the name of the new OS. One of them begins with the letter “M”.

In April 2014, Apple has registered some trademarks. They include the names of well known places in California:

  • California
  • Big Sur
  • Condor
  • Diablo
  • El Cap
  • Farallon
  • Grizzly
  • Mammoth
  • Monterey
  • Miramar
  • Pacific
  • Red Tail
  • Redwood
  • Rincon
  • Sequoia
  • Shasta
  • Sierra
  • Skyline
  • Sonoma
  • Tiburon
  • Ventura
  • Yosemite

Some of them were used in recent versions of macOS, in particular Yosemite, El Capitan and Sierra. Others, including Sonoma, Sequoia or Ventura, never acted as official names for software releases by Apple.

Most of the free titles are the main attractions of California: vineyards, national parks, beaches, etc. But there is one exception: Monterey. Monterey is a city located on the coast of the eponymous Bay in the Pacific ocean. District Cannery row is a popular tourist destination and is teeming with restaurants, bars, souvenir shops, etc. In this city is the famous Monterey Bay Aquarium, which provides many marine animals and plants.

Thus, this year we can expect the release of the operating system macOS 10.13 Monterey. The announcement will take place in early June at WWDC 2017.
