Analyst: 2016 will be a “black year” for iPhone

Well-known KGI Securities analyst Ming-Chi Kuo shared his vision with the next generation of Apple smartphones. According to him, in 2016 Apple will not be able to set a record for iPhone sales and the company expect the first ever drop in sales of their smartphones.

Estimated Kuo, this year Apple will not be able to realize more than 200 million smartphones, and the delivery of future flagships, iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus will not exceed those in the iPhone 6s and iPhone 6s Plus. The analyst believes that in developed markets users will not want to change iPhone 6 iPhone 6s or iPhone 7. The demand for high-end models in emerging markets are still not large enough.

The main hardware innovation of the iPhone 7 will be a dual camera, and it will be installed only in older versions with 5.5-inch screen. In its basis the technology of Israeli firm LinX Imaging, bought by Apple last year. One camera iPhone will provide optical image stabilization and a wider angle, and the second will be equipped with a three times optical zoom. If the optical stabilization have appeared in the iPhone 6s, the optical zoom is really new for Apple. It will also improve the sensitivity and imaging capability in poor light conditions.

The emergence of a dual camera in the iPhone 7 will not be a sufficient factor to update the smartphones, says Kuo. But if it appears in only one of the models, the “Apple” the novelty will greatly lose appeal.

It is worth noting that a recent survey of Bank of America and Merrill Lynch refute the predictions of KGI Securities. Investment companies have studied the upcoming demand for iPhone 7 among the potential buyers. The research results gave reason to anticipate a very high demand for the new generation of smartphones that Apple will show to the world in September of this year.

The survey involved 1000 people. 42% of respondents wishing to purchase “Apple” smartphone, waiting for the iPhone 7. This result, according to observers, allows to expect a new record sales of iPhone during the first three calendar quarters and unconditional leadership of the new flagship on the mobile market.
